Breast Reduction

Breast reductions are another common plastic surgery procedure performed by University of Florida Health plastic surgeons. A breast reduction, also known as a reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure that removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to not only achieve a proportional breast size in relation to the rest of your body, but alleviate pain associated with overly large breasts.

Overly large breasts have many negative consequences for women, such as chronic neck and back pain, problems breathing, psychological side effects of undue attention and limited physical activity.

Breast reductions are usually performed for medical reasons, not cosmetic ones. It makes breasts smaller, lighter and firmer by removing excess breast tissue, fat and skin through an anchor-shaped, downward incision around the areola. The procedure can give women a renewed sense of confidence, allowing them to pursue activities they couldn’t before.

Is a breast reduction right for me?

Excessively heavy breasts prevent many women from pursuing an active lifestyle and for many, the self-consciousness and emotional distress associated with overly large breasts is just as important a consideration as the physical limitations they present.

From a purely physical perspective, a breast reduction surgery is safe if you are in good health and have realistic expectations. However, breast reduction surgery must first and foremost be something you want.

It is recommended women do not undergo the procedure until after age 20, when the breasts are fully developed. Also, breast reduction surgery is NOT recommended for women who intend to breast feed in the future since the procedure involves removing many of the milk ducts leading to the nipples.

Breast reduction is a very individual, personal decision. It should not be undertaken to satisfy others’ desire. We will be happy to discuss with you your goals for this life-changing decision.

How should I prepare for my breast reduction surgery?

Before undergoing breast reduction surgery, you will be asked various questions about your goals, any medications you are currently taking, previous surgeries and if your family has any history of breast cancer.

In addition to an examination, our plastic surgeon will recommend a treatment plan for you and discuss likely outcomes of breast reduction surgery.

If you decide to move forward with breast reduction surgery, there are several things you will need to do. Obtain a medical evaluation to be sure you are physically up for the procedure. Stop smoking well before your scheduled appointment and avoid Aspirin, anti-inflammatory and herbal supplements as they increase the risk of bleeding.

On the day of your breast reduction surgery, be sure someone can drive you home since it’s an outpatient procedure. We also recommend you ask a friend or relative to stay the night with you to help monitor your recovery.

Contact and discuss your situation with a UF Health breast reduction surgeon and be sure you have all the bases covered before undergoing any procedure.

How long does it take to recover from breast reduction surgery, and what care and maintenance should I anticipate?

Dressings and bandages will be applied to the affected area after your reduction mammaplasty. You may also be required to wear an elastic bandage or support bra to minimize swelling and support your breasts as the healing process progresses.

Surgeons also may place a thin temporary tube to drain any excess blood or fluids that may build up as a result of this procedure.

But above all, precisely follow your surgeon’s post-op instructions to avoid infection and other complications. They will instruct you how to take care of your breasts, any medications you should apply or take orally and when to follow up for a checkup.

Immediately seek medical attention if you experience shortness of breath, chest pains or unusual heartbeats after you return home

Your new breast size should help alleviate your pain and remove physical limitations prior to your breast reduction surgery. A better proportioned figure will enhance your self-confidence and give you a better quality of life. But over time, your breasts can change due to aging, weight fluctuations, hormonal factors and gravity.
