Laser Hair Removal
Specialists from UF Health Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics Center employ leading-edge technology to help you get rid of unsightly hair
Hair growth in certain places like underarms, bikini lines, on your face and elsewhere may make you feel uncomfortable. Fortunately, laser hair removal provides an effective, non-invasive treatment option for men and women with excess, unwanted hair.
In the past, plucking, shaving, waxing, bleaching or other chemical applications were used to deal with unwanted hair. These processes were quite messy and only offered a temporary solution.
Laser hair removal technology offers a longer term solution that’s cleaner and more comfortable than traditional hair removal methods.
During a laser hair removal procedure, a laser beam at a specific wavelength will strike the root of the hair and disable new growth. A few treatments over the course of a few months goes a long way toward ensuring all unwanted hair follicles are targeted.
Treatments last anywhere from 15 to 90 minutes depending on the size of the area you’re treating.Patients can experience mild discomfort when undergoing laser hair removal. This feeling is best described as a small rubber band snapping against the skin. If the discomfort is too much, a topical anesthesia can be applied or you can apply an aloe vera gel immediately following your treatment.
It’s generally recommended that patients get three to six treatments over a three-year period. If and when new hair growth occurs, it will be much lighter and thinner. Patients experience a 75 percent reduction in hair growth, on average. Arrested hair growth following six treatments has been reported, but should not be expected.
Patients should avoid direct contact with the sun for at least three to six months following their laser hair removal procedure. Wearing sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 will help protect your skin from burning or dark discoloration.
